Winter is Coming! It's still Cool to Be Hot!

31/08/2026

We are just coming out of the most amazing summer imaginable, the best they say since 1976. After months of blistering sunshine and blue skies, it is hard to believe that we are back to lighting the stove and turning on the central heating.

Before you do there are a few checks you should do to ensure you are as warm this winter as you were in the summer.

  • Check your chimney for any nests or debris that Mr. Crow may have dropped down the chimney when up to no good over the summer. My advice would be to have it professionally cleaned.
  • Check rope seals on your stove door. An uncomplicated way to check is to put a sheet of A4 paper down the top of the door, close it and pull the paper out. If the paper tears or offers resistance, your rope is okay. If it pulls out with no resistance, it needs to be replaced. Continue this on the other three sides of the door.
  • Check your glass for cracks, a cracked glass will let in air and shorten the life of the stove. It could also increase your fuel consumption by up to 50%.
  • Check that the bricks in your stove are intact and not cracked or worn down. The bricks protect your stove from the fire and prolong the life of your stove.
  • Clean out any of last season's ash along with any sweet wrappers etc. (don't worry we all do it in the summer!).
  • The most important thing to do is check your carbon monoxide alarm and create the habit of checking it every Tuesday, it could save your life.

If you are in doubt about anything above, just drop us a line hello@inspiredinteriors.ie and we would be happy to advise.
